Our relationship with the world is one of giving and taking; our love is motivated by self-interest. Some people come to us as wives, some as husbands, some as children and some as friends. The moment a particular sequence of Karmas comes to an end, all those involved resumed their separate ways.
No one has ever accompanied another person into the next world, nor is it possible to do so. Because we take these relations to be real, we busy ourselves night and day trying to possess them; we involve ourselves in thousands of deceptions and dishonesties in order to make them ours.
Still they do not become ours, nor have we ever become theirs. It is through us that our children are born, but they can never belong to us. Our Father and Mother gave birth to us, but they too do not belong to us,nor we to them. They have to go through their own destiny, their Pralabdh Karmas just as we have to go through ours.
When actors come on stage, they all assume their different roles; when they come down from the stage, none of them maintain these relationships any more. This world is a vast stage, and according to our Karmas, each one of us is playing our role. But we forget that we will have to step down from the stage. When we do not remember our parents, relatives and friends of previous births,on whose account we are undergoing so much trouble today, who is going to remember these relationships, for which we are suffering so much now? Some have already left us and gone ahead, while we too are getting ready to leave others when we go.
Saints arouse us from our heedless stupor, saying: On whose account are you so restless and suffering so much anguish? For what purpose has the Lord bestowed on you this human form? Why do you take this creation to be real and agitate yourself running around in pursuit of the things of the world? When great kings, rulers and business tycoons had leave the world in the very process of trying to possess it, and nothing of it went with them, what can possibly go with you?.
